BASQUES COURTS Charles Johnstone
Basque Courts by Charles Johnstone’s is an extensive look at two iconic types of courts in the French Basque Country ; Frontons (outdoor courts) and Trinquets (indoor courts), both are used to play different varieties of pelota.
Over a 2 year period Johnstone documented the indiosycratic courts of the Basque region of France, most of which were built in the 19th Century, and remain well used and integral parts of the small towns that they are a part of. The book features a hand drawn map marking the points of Johnstone’s journey through the region. Basque Courts, along with Johnstone's earlier books - East Court (Court Tennis) and Sixty by Thirty (Racquets) marks the thrird book in a triology defined by Johnstone’s stylized view of the courts. All three books share a minimalistic take from their content to their covers designed by Bill Sullivan. The book also features an essay by renowned writer James Zug.
“The fluidity in these photographs transcends the normal boundaries of sports photography, pushing the pictures toward elegant abstractions. His photo book is a warm tribute to the sport, presented in an understated but thoughtful format.”
